First UHV Project of China's 15th Five-Year Plan Era Begins Operation in Shandong

The Yanwei 1000 kV ultra-high voltage project, a critical conduit for delivering clean energy from the Jiaodong Peninsula in Shandong, was officially completed and put into operation on October 10, marking the first UHV AC power transmission and transformation project to commence operation during China's 15th Five-Year Plan period, according to Windmoon Energy.

The Yanwei UHV project spans a total line length of 1,197 kilometers, passing through five cities: Yantai, Qingdao, Rizhao, Weifang, and Linyi.

As the nation's first UHV project dedicated to serving nuclear power transmission, the completed facility will channel nuclear power generated in Yantai's Haiyang, Laiyang, and other areas to the entire province. Meanwhile, wind power, solar power, and other renewable energy sources in the Yanwei region will also achieve optimized allocation across the province through this corridor.

Cheng Jian, director of the UHV Management Division of the Construction Department at State Grid Shandong Electric Power Company, stated: With the rapid development of nuclear power, offshore wind power, and other clean energy sources on the Jiaodong Peninsula in Shandong, the peninsula is becoming a major base for power transmission. By the end of the 15th Five-Year Plan period, surplus power transmitted from the Yanwei region is expected to exceed 30 million kilowatts. The Yanwei UHV project functions like a "green electricity expressway," allowing these clean energy sources to flow smoothly across the entire province.

Once operational, the Yanwei UHV project will interconnect with Shandong's existing UHV network, forming a double-loop structure and creating the nation's first provincial-level UHV double-loop grid. Such a double-loop network will not only enable the smooth transmission of clean energy generated by renewable energy bases in eastern and northern Shandong, but will also substantially enhance the safety, stability, and reliability of the Shandong power grid.
